HPV Vaccine: What You Need to Know

The HPV vaccine is a crucial tool in preventing cervical cancer. It protects against the Human papillomavirus (HPV), which is the main cause of cervical cancer transmitted through sexual contact. HPV can be classified into high-risk strains that cause cancer and low-risk strains that cause genital warts.

When to Get the HPV Vaccine

The HPV vaccine is most effective when administered to individuals who have not yet had sexual intercourse. It can be given to both females and males, with females eligible from ages 9-45 and males from ages 9-26.

Dosage and Administration

For ages 9-15, two doses are given, with the second dose administered at least 6 months but no more than 12 months after the first dose. For ages 15 and above, three doses are given, with each dose administered at months 0, 2, and 6 from the first dose.

Protection Duration

After receiving the HPV vaccine, protection lasts for more than 10 years. Data shows that even after 10 years, the vaccine maintains an efficacy of up to 90% in preventing cervical cancer, making a booster shot unnecessary.
